Cape Coral High senior H. Halverson and Mariner senior Grant Burgess both played well enough in Monday’s District 2A-15 golf tournament at Eastwood Golf Club to qualify for the Region 2A-5 tournament.

Halverson posted an 18-hole round of 77 and Burgess carded a 79. They are among the three individuals to qualify, in addition to the top three teams, for the regional tournament to be played next Monday at the Stoneybrook Golf Club in Bradenton.

The West Zone did not fare quite as well in the team scoring.

Mariner placed fourth with a team score of 337. That was one spot away from qualifying for regional. The top three qualifying teams are Barron Collier (307), Fort Myers (313) and Palmetto Ridge (332).

Tritons coach James Harris said the team had higher expectations after scoring 303 in the LCAC Tournament last week.

“They were tough conditions, but they were the same for everybody,” Harris said. “We finished five strokes out so we just needed a few less strokes from everybody.”

C.J. Cricco shot 85, Kyle Schulte 85 and Braden Junkins 89 for the Tritons.

Ida Baker placed sixth in the 12-team district with a score of 346. Cape Coral was next at 350, and North Fort Myers turned in a 387.

District A-17 at Pelican Preserve: Kevin Reynolds shot an 18-hole round of 71 to win medalist honors Monday, leading Bishop Verot to the district championship.

The Vikings finished first in the nine-team district standings with a total of 293, advancing to the Region A-6 Tournament next Monday in Sarasota.

Along with Reynolds, Chase Marinell carded a 73, Austin Lee shot 74 and Jack Hernandez was one back with 75.

Evangelical Christian (325) and Lemon Bay (337) placed second and third, respectively.

Girls Golf

District A-17 at The Vineyards: Steady rain showers suspended play in the district tournament Monday in Naples.

Six girls completed their rounds, but the remaining players have between one and four holes to complete. Play resumes at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Volleyball

Cypress Lake 3, Ida Baker 1: Ida Baker pressed the issue throughout, but lost a tight match to Cypress Lake Monday night 25-18, 25-23, 24-26, 25-23.

Taylor Van Horn led the Bulldogs in kills with nine while sister Payton Van Horn added five kills. Chelsey Cline chipped in with nine digs and Caitlyn Holloway came up with six. Deonnah Finley contributed nine assists.

Baker (9-6) visits Barron Collier Tuesday night.

Fort Myers 3, North Fort Myers 0: Monday’s matchup against arch-rival Fort Myers went from bad to worse for North Fort Myers, which absorbed a 25-13, 25-8, 25-9 defeat.

Denasia Smith made two blocks for the Red Knights, Alyssa Dougherty and Kayla Ramey had five digs apiece.

The Red Knights (6-12) host Cape Coral Tuesday night.
