Prep Report: Yi wins LCAC playoff
Daily Breeze Staff Report, breezesports@breezenewspapers.com
By the time North Fort Myers senior Emily Yi completed her personal-best 18-hole round of golf, she could hardly remember the specifics — birdies, bogeys, etc.
“I have no short-term memory,” Yi said.
It was important because after shooting a 77 in the LCAC girls’ golf tournament Monday at Royal Tee Golf Club, Yi had to refocus for a playoff against Riverdale’s Rene Kelly, who also posted a 77.
Both Yi and Kelly were accurate from tee to green on the first playoff hole, a par-4, and faced similar four-foot par putts, but After Yi sank her putt, Kelly’s attempt for par lipped out, giving Yi the win and the individual title.
“I was just saying in my head to get par or better,” Yi said. “I’ve never actually been in sudden death before, so for me it was just another hole.”
Yi, who also won the North of the River Tournament last week, led North to a third-place finish in the LCAC team standings. Riverdale placed first with 203, Fort Myers second (218) and Cape Coral fourth (229).
While many of the players completed all 18 holes, some were unable to finish due to afternoon storm conditions. The team scoring then reverted back to each team’s nine-hole scores.
Georgia Price of Fort Myers shot 80 to finish third overall. Miko Dougherty of Ida Baker and Regina Sin of Cape Coral came in with identical 87s, but Dougherty placed fourth after a playoff tiebreaker.
