Firecats blast Thunderbirds 48-15
They haven’t played the “perfect game” yet, but the Florida Firecats are getting closer. In the process, they just keep winning.
Saturday’s 48-15 win over the Daytona Beach Thunderbirds was another example.
After seemingly playing down to Daytona’s level in the first half, the Firecats led only 13-6 at halftime against the last-place team in the division.
“There were just too many mental mistakes early in the game,” coach Kevin Bouis said.
It all changed in the second half. It was, as if, a switch was turned on — or more likely — the Firecats realized they were 7-1.
The Firecats came out blazing in the third quarter, marching down the field in an efficient and clock-draining drive for a touchdown.
After holding Daytona to a field goal, Florida followed up with another score, then another, and another. In all, the Firecats offense scored on all five of their second half possessions.
Putting it mildly, Bouis said “We really started to get it rolling.”
Defensively they were just as impressive.
Whether it was Antonio Dingle getting a sack to force a field goal, Tony Stubbs getting a safety, or a George Lewis interception, the Firecats defense was there to make plays.
“It’s getting better every week,” said Lewis, a linebacker. “We practiced like champions this week, and when you practice like champions you play like champions.”
It wasn’t all good for Florida. Veteran quarterback Chris Wallace threw four touchdown passes but had two interceptions.
“I’ll take the win, but we still have a lot of work to do,” he said evenly.
The Firecats (8-1) return to action Friday when they visit Manchester.
