Eagles complete sweep of Mercer with 8-5 victory

The FGCU baseball team completed a three-game sweep of Mercer with an 8-5 win Sunday, improving to 18-5 overall and 10-2 in the Atlantic Sun.

With the series sweep, the Eagles now have a two-game lead in the conference standing. The Bears fell to 9-13 overall and 6-6 in the A-Sun.

Casey Coleman, from Cape Coral, went 6 2/3 innings on the mound and contributed a two-run single in the bottom of the eighth.

FGCU put a pair of runs on the board in the bottom of the first inning with a two-out rally by Vinnie Scarduzio.

After Mercer put up a pair of runs in the fourth inning, the Eagles responded with three of their own in the bottom of the frame.

FGCU took the lead for good in the eighth. Cape Coral’s Josh Upchurch led off with a single and after a pair of walks, D.J. Bissell singled to put the Eagles up 6-5.  Coleman tacked on two more runs with a single to put the Eagles up 8-5.

Upchurch and Borrell each went 3-4. 

The Eagles host USF at 6:00 p.m. Tuesday at Swanson Stadium.
