Marlins prospect ‘innocent victim’ in shooting

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) – A Florida Marlins prospect wounded in a drive-by shooting was the innocent victim of gangsters battling for control of drug distribution in public housing projects, police said Thursday.

Osvaldo Martinez Pizarro, 21, was shot three times at an intersection in the city of Carolina, and the shortstop was not the intended target, police spokeswoman Maria Rivera said. There have been no arrests.

Rivera said it “seems that (gunmen) confused him with another person” as Martinez drove through Carolina, just east of the Caribbean island’s capital, San Juan.

Martinez played 130 games for the Jupiter Hammerheads in the Florida State League.
