Track athletes allowed to compete
TAMPA (AP) – Despite their school being closed because of a swine flu threat, 10 Tampa track athletes will be allowed to participate in Friday’s state championship meet if they don’t have any flu symptoms.
The athletes from Freedom High School had been told they couldn’t go to the state meet in Orlando after the threat of swine flu led officials to close the school this week. Two middle schools also were closed.
Hillsborough County School District spokesman Stephen Hegarty said Tuesday the athletes will be able to participate if they are free of flu symptoms. They’ll be examined by nurses at the school Wednesday morning.
