Red Sox double up Yankees
Boston third baseman Mike Lowell played in the field for the first time this spring in the Red Sox’s 8-4 victory over the New York Yankees Friday night at City of Palms Park.
Tim Wakefield picked up his first spring win, allowing four runs and five hits over 2 1/3 innings. He walked three and struck out three.
Yankees starter Chien-Ming Wang was roughed up, yielding seven runs – one earned – and six hits in 1 2/3 innings.
Reds 1, Twins 0: Francisco Liriano surrendered his first home run this spring training, but the Minnesota pitcher has not lost his focus on returning to his 2006 form.
Liriano struck out five and walked one in 3 1/3 innings in front of a sellout crowd at Hammond Stadium in a loss to Cincinnati.
“He was still effective,” Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said. “Very effective.”
Reds right-hander Micah Owings, hoping to be the team’s fifth starter, struck out four and gave up no runs and two hits in four innings. He has a 1.23 ERA after four spring starts.
Jonny Gomes slugged the homer over the left-field fence in the third inning.
“My fastball was going all over the place,” said Liriano, who walked one and gave up three hits. “I’m not trying to strike out people. I’m just trying to locate my fastball.”
