Athlete of the Week 4-29-22

Luke Buzzelli
Junior, Ida Baker
Weightlifting
Buzzelli took home the bronze in the traditional lift at the FHSAA Class 2A State Weightlifting Championships in the 169-pound weight class with total lifts of 575 pounds. He set personal bests at the meet, and was undefeated in regular season competition.
“It means a lot to me taking home the bronze and having the best performance of my career. I’ve been putting hundreds of hours into the gym over the course of 3 years with my teammates and coach, so to see all that hard work pay off is very rewarding. We have been working on my form and strength training while dialing it in for states, and even with all of the stress of being on the biggest stage, we pulled through and I’m proud to bring home the bronze medal.”
Victoria Ash
Junior, Bishop Verot
Softball
Ash was dominant in the circle in back-to-back victories for the Vikings Saturday. The Stetson University commit tossed 11 total innings of shutout ball, first in a four-inning performance against Estero where she struck out 10 and drove in two runs. She followed up with a complete game effort against Riverdale where she fanned 11 and allowed just one hit.
“It was a great Saturday. I’m always ready for the challenge when asked to take the ball and am thankful for every opportunity. My biggest priority was to keep runners off the bases. It’s great to have my defense back me up and make plays for a complete team effort. When I’m on the mound all I think about is to doing my part and lead the field with energy and confidence.”
