Garden happiness

By ANN BLOCK - Garden Club of Cape Coral | Nov 24, 2020

Happiness is in our gardens! What to do in our gardens going into our southwest fall (soon to be winter) florida season…fertilize. It has been a while since we were able to fertilize. The fertilizer blackout is officially over. Our plants, bushes, and trees will appreciate your efforts. And with cooler weather, this is the time to weed, and refresh your gardens with new annuals and perennials. Visit your locally owned nursery or garden center for colorful plants … like the blue delphinium (aka larkspur). Del-phinium is a late winter/spring annual here, best in full to part sun. Plant near your entryway for an eye-popping color surprise! If it hasn’t rained, water twice a week.

Check your gardens for pest damage. If you see any, put cuttings in a sealed plastic bag and take them to your local nursery for diagnosis and treatment ideas. Never a dull moment for creating happiness in our outdoor wonderland!

I wanted to share with you an incredible event. Have you heard about “March In The Park?” I’d like you to mark your calendars for March 13, 2021. The Garden Club of Cape Coral will present its major fundraiser “March in the Park,” a plant and garden art sale. This sale will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Jaycee Park, 4125 S..E 20th Place in Cape Coral. With over 35 vendors, there will be plants of all kinds, trees, shrubs, ground cover, native plants and miniatures to name a few. Garden art will include essential and fragrance oils and soaps, glass reflections, stepping stones, metal works, fish faces and various planters.

Well known speakers will make informative presentations hourly and master gardeners will be available all day to answer questions. A kid’s booth, with a face painter, will have activities and take-home projects for all ages. Food, music and opportunity drawings will be available throughout the day. Admission and parking are free.

A little about our club … The Garden Club of Cape Coral is a non-profit organization and all proceeds go to the club objectives. Local high school seniors Marty Ward Merit Awards in horticulture, civic beautification, Habitat for Humanity Projects, local middle and high school garden projects, and to promote civic awareness of environmental and conservation concerns.

And lastly, I’d like to share one of my most favorite garden quotes … by Alfred Austin:

“The glory of gardening…hands in the dirt, head in the sun, heart with nature. To nurture a garden is to feed not just the body, but the soul.”
