‘Roc ‘n’ rollin’ weavers, spinners and — cars
Saturday, Jan. 9, promises to bring a new spin to the halls and meeting rooms of the Cape Coral Library. The weavers of Char-Lee will hold their 12th annual Roc Day Celebration Saturday, Jan. 9, from 1-4:30 p.m. in the library hallway. Joel Levy LoGiudice from Tennessee will conduct the “Ragtime Designs Weaving” workshop. Hands-on demonstrations of weavers and spinners whose looms and wheels will be out-of-storage and spinning frenetically after the “12 Days of Christmas” hiatus. Share their joy and dazzling displays which will be featured throughout the library gallery. This library event has been very popular for the community for more than a decade.
Also on the 9th at 11 a.m.: Cars & Rock ‘n’ Roll of the ’50s. Brought to you by the Friends of the Cape Coral Library, Steve Valdespino provides a rollicking review of cars and music of the 1950s. Join the ‘roc’ ‘n ’50s fun!
The Friends of the Cape Coral Library held a very successful book sale in November and thanks go out to all of Cape Coral and Lee County – for their generous donations as well as record attendance at this three-day event. We ask that you please keep April in mind – our next book sale – and bring your donations to the Cape Library or call for pick up see info below.
Throughout the first month of the New Year, the library offers various-interest programs for the entire family and community:
– Wednesday, Jan. 13, at 1 p.m.: “How 10 Billion People can Thrive on a Fragile Planet.” Tom Blees, author of “Prescription for the Planet,” will describe the means by which climate change, water shortages and wars over resources can be avoided by employing cutting-edge technologies and enlightened public policy. How to achieve these goals in an environmentally benign manner is the greatest challenge of the new millennium.
– Saturday, Jan. 16, at 1:30 p.m.: “The Tale of Two Countries.” Plein-air poet Karla Linn Mencifield reads from her works of Canada and the USA.
– Friday, Jan. 22, at 2 p.m.: “MAD SCIENCE: FIRE AND ICE!” For kids, this is an exceptional program of safe and scientific fun with fire and ice. Learn about the amazing properties of fire. Then cool off with spectacular demonstrations with dry ice. Explore the science behind frozen gas. The Mad Science explores live, interactive and compelling educational experiments.
– Saturday, Jan. 23, at 3 p.m.: “Ben Franklin: Bigger Than His Legend.” Not to be outdone by “the kids,” Dr. Rich Davis brings the adults Ben Franklin to discuss his science – his life, his loves, his … lightnin’!
– Monday, Jan. 25, at 2 p.m.: All kids are welcome to “Create a Star Wars Craft: The Force Awakens!” Registration is necessary as all supplies are provided.
– Friday, Jan. 26-29, at 9 a.m.: Join the Char-Lee and Art Quilters Unlimited for an on-going Weaving Workshop. Contact Rose Young at 239-540-5836.
– Saturday, Jan. 30 at 2 p.m.: “Vegetarian Cooking.” It’s not just for the Back-to-Nature Crowd. Whether you want a healthier addition to your meals or just a veggie option this is a program to attend.
All Lee County Library System branches are closed Friday, Jan. 1.

Cape Coral Library hours
9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday Wednesday; 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Thursday; and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

All Lee County Library System programs are free and open to the public. A sign language interpreter is available with 48 hours’ notice. Call the Deaf Service Center at 461-0334 (voice) or 461-4348 (TTY). The Lee County Library System also offers free access to books, DVDs, videos, books on CD, electronic resources and other items from a vast collection.
The Lee County Library System makes it possible for people who ordinarily couldn’t visit the library to enjoy reading through the Bookmobile, Books-by-MAIL, Talking Books and Literacy programs.
All of the money the Friends of the Cape Coral Library raise is through book sales, dues and other events which are used to purchase materials, furniture and other items that can not be included in the County library budget. Books, CDs, DVDs, etc., are accepted throughout the year for the two book sales, April and November, the major fundraisers. Small quantities can be delivered to the library circulation desk.
