Before Christmas and New Year’s: many programs to cheer
From yoga and tai chi sessions to what’s in the Lee County Clerk of Court website? to wants, needs and a movie! December programs at the Library promise to fill any gap in this busy shopping and celebratory month.
– Wednesday, Dec. 2, at 5:30 p.m., Hatha Yoga: in the meeting room.
– Monday, Dec. 7, at 2 p.m., The Soul of a Soldier: Mike Cheesman presents his gentle tunes and powerful storytelling of patriotism, sacrifice and heroism on both sides of the Great War.
– Wednesday, Dec. 9, at 1:30 p.m., The Value of Searching Public Records and Online Services: Clerk of Court Linda Doggett will detail information available on the Lee County Clerk of Court website. Learn how to report Guardianship fraud, review civil and criminal public records, get copies of deeds and mortgages, pay traffic fines, request postponement or excusal from jury duty, obtain a passport or marriage license and locate links to other local agencies.
– Wednesday, Dec. 9, at 2 p.m., “Packing for Mars” by Mary Roach: Explore the strange universe of space travel and life without gravity.
– Thursday, Dec. 10, at 11 a.m., Tai Chi/Qi Gong.
– Wednesday, Dec. 16, at 9:30 a.m., Hatha Yoga
– Wednesday, Dec. 16, at 3 p.m., Gift Tags with Flair (especially for teens): Personalized gift tags can say (and mean) a lot.
– Friday, Dec. 18, at 1 p.m., “Wants, Needs and More:” Author Lola Sinelli’s book “Wants, Needs and More” is chock-full of advice on ways to lose weight and keep it off, tricks to reduce sugar dependency, how to quit smoking and never start again, how to grow old with less pain and more flexibility and the best-kept secrets to fitness and more.
– Tuesday, Dec. 29, at 3:30 p.m., “The Velveteen Rabbit:” Popular presenter Katie Adams will bring the classic story of a boy with his plush toy rabbit to the library, complete with puppets and amazing scenery. Bring the whole family!
– Wednesday, Dec. 30, at 1 p.m.: the Cape Coral Library will begin its movie presentation, a once-a-month offering.
– Dec. 24 and 25 and 31: All branches of the library system will be closed.

Art Gallery for December
A Retrospective Show of oil paintings by local artist Pat Cleveland will be on display from Dec. 1-30. The exhibit will provide a view of the artist’s work during earlier years when her vision was normal as well as her more recent work, created while legally blind due to macular degeneration. The changes in her sight correspond to her transition from detailed, realistic images to more impressionistic and abstract paintings with a bolder color palette.
The exhibit provides a variety of subjects: landscapes, animals, still life, florals and portraits. Pat graduated from the Traphagen School of Design in New York City and was an interior designer with Bloomingdales in New Jersey and later with Robb and Stucky in Fort Myers. She has exhibited her fine art paintings locally in juried solo and group shows since 1981 receiving numerous awards and recognition.
Creations by the Mini De-Lights, who wowed visitors to the library’s gallery last year, will be back this time with Christmas and winter holiday displays in the gallery’s cases. The Mini De-Lights are a lively and friendly group of miniaturists who meet monthly in Fort Myers. Enthusiasm for their hobby is evident on their website, www.minide-lights.webs.com.
Cleveland will be joined by members of the Mini De-Lights miniature club for an artists’ reception at the Cape Library in the small conference room near the gallery. Saturday, Dec. 12, from 12:30-2:30 p.m. provides a great opportunity to view the exhibits, meet the artists and enjoy some light refreshments.

The Lee County Library System makes it possible for people who ordinarily couldn’t visit the library to enjoy reading through the Bookmobile, Books-by-MAIL, Talking Books and Literacy programs.
All of the money the Friends of the Cape Coral Library raise is through book sales, dues and other events which are used to purchase materials, furniture and other items that can not be included in the County library budget. Books, CDs, DVDs, etc., are accepted throughout the year for the two book sales, April and November, the major fundraisers. Small quantities can be delivered to the library circulation desk.
