Health, wealth and feathered friends to be featured at Cape Library in September

5 min read

With kids back in school, the fall season at the Cape Coral Library offers some very interesting programs for adults:

– Wednesday, Sept. 2, at 9:30 a.m.: Join many “stretchers” as Hatha Yoga is offered, promoting breathing, flexibility and relaxation.

– Tuesday, Sept. 22 at 9:30 a.m.: Tai Chi/Qi Gong continues the Eastern tradition of balance and flexibility, promoting blood flow and stimulation throughout the body’s organs.

For the health of finances, there’s a three-part financial empowerment workshop, as well as a seminar on Medicare:

– Thursday, Sept. 24 at 10-11 a.m.: Fifth Third Bank offers a free three-part interactive empowerment workshop: The first, Identity Protection: How easily your identity can be stolen; how to protect what you have. Friday, Sept. 25, 10-11 a.m.: Understanding and Improving Your Credit: What and why of credit scores; how to establish and maintain good credit. And Monday, Sept. 28, 10-11 a.m.: Savings and Budgeting: Lifestyle budget calendar, budgeting tips so important to young families.

– Tuesday, Sept. 29, 1-2:30 p.m.: “Medicare Traps and Gaps: What You Don’t Know Might Hurt You” forum. This eye-opening lecture and question and answer session will reveal enrollment rules, premium penalties and income-indexing.

Once the health and wealth workshops have been attended, join the Friends for some fun:

– Saturday, Sept. 26: Beginning at 9:30 a.m., the Friends of the Cape Coral Library’s first meeting of the “season” will take place with coffee, conversation and treats followed by a program especially for Southwest Florida residents: “Oh, the birds you will see: Shorebirds and Snowbirds.” Sally Stein, director of public programs for the Audubon Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary, will highlight the wide diversity of birds ranging from the wood stork to the whistling duck. Joining her will be Rachel Rainbolt, education coordinator for the Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife (CROW), focusing on the rehabilitation of birds (think local celebrity eagle Ozzie) at its famous facility on Sanibel Island.

And remember to SAVE THE [FUTURE] DATE: Our November, semi-annual book sale – with a HUGE selection in all categories – starts Thursday, Nov. 19, at 3 p.m. (For members only: You can join at the door for a nominal fee), followed by Friday, Nov. 20, at 9 a.m. for the general public and Saturday, Nov. 21 at 9 a.m.

Check the Lee County Library System’s website at www.leelibrary.net for other programs, including the ongoing Storytimes, Craft Corner, Chess Anyone?, English Cafe and Read Down Fines.

In the Art Gallery

– a special program

Artwork by participants in the Arts in Healthcare “art by the disABLEd” program at Lee Memorial Health System will be on display on the walls of the gallery Sept. 2-29. Arts in Healthcare is a nation-wide movement that links the expressive arts with the healing arts and brings these into the mainstream of the traditional healthcare to promote the well-being of those who are ill and their caregivers. It integrates the expressive arts in all forms into the healthcare setting to provide creative outlets for patients, family and staff.

Artwork created by participants in the city of Cape Coral Special Populations Center will be on exhibit in the gallery cases. The mission statement for the center, which is part of the Parks and Recreation Department, is: “to promote independence for persons with intellectual and physical disabilities through education, exposure, experience and encouragement in a safe, caring environment.” The colorful paintings, sculpture and crafts in this exhibit were created during art sessions at the Freida B. Smith Special Populations Center.
