MacGregor’s work on display in Cape Library gallery

4 min read

With school back in session Aug. 24, the Cape Coral Lee County Public Library programs are trickling down to a few although the few promise to be fun and functional:

Tuesday, Aug. 4, at 2 p.m.: “Come and Build.” For K 5th graders, a Lego program provides an opportunity to use the imagination and build a special Lego design. It’s also a chance for older children to assist younger ones with design strategies. Building something with Legos can be as creative as painting on canvas. Join this last-minute fun before summer programs end.

Tuesday, Aug. 11, at 2 p.m.: Craft a Back-to-School Notebook. This popular program, personalizing a notebook, involves special icons for covers as well as tabs for individualizing school schedules, addresses and phone numbers of new friends. This is an opportunity to create an attractive and functional tablet, then begin the school year carrying something NOTEworthy.

For adults, Wednesday, Aug. 5, 9:30-11 a.m.: Hatha Yoga, with Carol Ellis. Bring a towel or a Yoga blanket and stretch and reach until all stress has passed. Hatha Yoga returns Wednesday, Aug. 19, at the same time. These are sponsored by the Friends of the Cape Coral Library.

Thursday, Aug. 13, at 11 a.m.: Come for Tai Chi/Qi Gong. Learn the balance and grace of this ancient way to heal.

Check the Lee County Library System’s website at www.leelibrary.net for other programs, including the ongoing Storytimes, Craft Corner, Chess Anyone?, English Cafe and Read Down Fines.

And, if nothing calls you into the Library this August, perhaps the artistry of Doug MacGregor will:

In the art gallery in August

Well-known cartoonist and illustrator Doug MacGregor will exhibit his work from Aug. 4-31 in the art gallery. The exhibit features original cartoons that satirize and celebrate Southwest Florida and its politicians, the exhibit includes flora, fauna, beach life, sports and hobbies. MacGregor describes his work as “a humorous and uplifting look at how we live and play.”

An editorial cartoonist as well as a children’s book illustrator for more than two decades, MacGregor’s work has been a regular feature of the News-Press and has appeared in USA Today.

In addition to his cartoons, MacGregor has published a number of children’s books. His work has been exhibited at the Alliance for the Arts, BIG Arts, ARTS for ACT, Rauschenberg Gallery, International Design Center, Sidney and Berne Davis Art Center and Florida Gulf Coast University, to name a few.

Also, continuing in the gallery are the paintings and sculpture of local artist Joel Loeper. Entitled “30/30/30,” this exhibit is a representation of 30 years of work, featuring more than 30 oil paintings and more than 30 clay sculptures.

A love of animals, especially those found in the wild, are the focus. By his exhibit, Loeper hopes to reach others with an understanding of the wonders of gorillas, manatees, tigers, sea turtles and other endangered animals.

Loeper’s artwork has appeared in many publications and has been exhibited in local galleries including Tampa, Bradenton and Gatlinburg, Tennessee.
