Brown, Rosenbohm among performers at Cape Coral Library this March

4 min read

Rusty Brown’s newest production is among the programs the Friends of the Cape Coral Library will be sponsoring in March. Brown brings her spell-binding talent to the library at 2 p.m., Saturday, March 28, when she presents “Emma Lazarus: America’s First Greeter.”

For those not familiar with Lazarus, she was a brilliant poet and activist. Born to Sephardic Jews in New York in 1849, her sonnet, “The New Colossus” is her most famous work. Her words appear on a bronze plaque in the Statue of Liberty.

Brown brings Lazarus to life in this one-hour presentation of the woman, her life and the importance of her work. Brown’s productions fill up quickly so registration is important: 479-4636 or online at leelibrary.net.

The Tenth Annual Coloring the Earth Contest is just around the corner so children across Lee County are encouraged to begin the research required to take brush and color to canvas and produce an original work of art. This year’s theme, “Bald Eagles in Southwest Florida and ways to protect them,” can be researched through several websites and by visiting the webpage, www.capecoral.net/department/community_development/environment-al/bald_eagle_information.php#.VCy8ezD-M8.

Wildlife biologist Dr. Jerry Jackson, professor emeritus at FGCU and producer and host of the NPR show, “With the Wild Things,” will be the keynote speaker at the May 6 presentation at the Cape Coral Library.

The deadline for artwork is April 27. This year’s anniversary celebration promises to be an important milestone.

Other offerings in March include:

– Friday, March 13, at 10 a.m., there will be a program on Digital Photography.

– Saturday, March 14, at 1:30 p.m., My Guitar with Jane Rosenbohm. This gifted performer is also donating a classical guitar, to be given away during a drawing at the performance.

– March 17 and 24, the library presents Beginning Computer Skills, part 1 and 2.

Check the Lee County Library System’s website at www.leelibrary.net for continuing programs, including story times, Books and Banter, English caf, Craft Corner, Chess anyone?, Read Down Fines, and others.

In the Art Gallery

Artwork by the Portrait and Figure Painters Society of SW Florida will be on display in the alcove of the library art gallery in March. Entitled “Prominent People,” the exhibit showcases notable individuals, present and past. Artists Robert Pavon, Renate M. Reuter, Marianne Keefe, Tracy Cullimore, Shelly Salter, Jean Eaton and Dorothy Salcedo make up the talented group presenting this important exhibit.

Martha Grattan, whose clay art has been in the cases during February, will exhibit new pieces during March. Fused glass and jewelry by Sherry Moesch and clay art by Mary Ann Lehmann will also be displayed. All three are members of the Southwest Florida Fine Craft Guild.

Beaded jewelry designed by Pamela Pearson will be shown in one of the cases. Each of her pieces is unique and has a story that explains the inspiration or the materials that were repurposed to create it.
