FGCU hoops teams extend win streaks
Both FGCU basketball teams extended winning streaks on Saturday with road victories over Stetson.
Despite an early nine-point deficit, the FGCU women gained momentum and rolled past Stetson 61-39 to post their 16th straight win. The Eagles (21-2, 8-0 Atlantic Sun) maintain a three-game lead over the Hatters in conference standings.
FGCU’s Kaneisha At-water led all scorers with 16 points, Jenna Cobb and DyTiesha Dunson contributed 10 and nine, respectively.
Atwater also led the team’s rebounding effort with eight, with Cobb pull-ing down seven of the team’s 37 rebounds.
The first-place Eagles return to Alico Arena to take on Northern Kentucky Thursday.
Senior guard Brett Comer flirted with FGCU’s first-ever triple-double, but settles for 21 points, 12 assists and eight rebounds in leading the Eagles (17-7, 7-1 A-Sun) to their sixth straight win 67-51 at Stetson.
Comer’s performance earned him the conference Player of the Week award.
The victory keeps FGCU in a first-place tie with North Florida (15-10, 7-1). The six-game winning streak is the third-longest in Division-I program history.
Demetris Morant produced the best all-around performance of his career as the redshirt sophomore scored nine points, grabbed a career-high 11 rebounds and blocked a career-best seven shots. The seven rejections are the most in program history against a D-I opponent, and one shy of tying the all-time record of eight Nate Hicks set against Eckerd last year.
FGCU continues its three-game road trip Thursday with a journey to Northern Kentucky followed by a Saturday tipoff at Lipscomb.
Softball: The Eagles opened the softball season in Gulf Shores, Ala., by winning two of five games in the San Dollar Classic.
The Eagles (2-3) now head to Tampa for a Presidents Day weekend tournament at USF that starts Friday against Tennessee.
