Friends to host wine-tasting fund-raiser Feb. 7

5 min read

An upcoming Friends’ fund-raiser provides a different venue from our semi-annual book sales. A private wine-tasting event with experts Jerry Greenfield (author of “The Wine Whisperer”) and MaryJane Vu (founder of the Waterside Wine Club) will take place Saturday, Feb. 7, at 3 p.m., at 2829 S.W. 50th Terrace in Cape Coral.

The two sommeliers will explain the distinct bouquets and attributes of several inexpensive, international wines with light hors d’oeuvres and wine afterwards, providing an opportunity to chat with Greenfield and Vu – or simply munch, sip and mingle.

The $20 fee goes toward outstanding programs sponsored by the Friends and offered free at the Cape Coral Library throughout the year. Regularly sponsored programs include the youth reading programs in the summer, chess, the ever-popular Books and Banter, Craft Corner as well as children and adult programs – like the recent appearance of nationally-acclaimed storyteller Kim Weitkamp.

The Friends also underwrite equipment purchases such as an upgrade of the audio visual system in the library meeting room. Call 541-2617 for further details regarding this wine-tasting fund-raiser.

February offerings:

n Also on Saturday, Feb. 7, at 1:30 p.m.: CROW’s “Patient Profiles: Birds of Prey.” This program consists of a visit from one of CROW’s wildlife ambassadors – with an introduction to common Southwest Florida raptors while relating treatments given by CROW’s medical staff in its wildlife hospital and rehab center. (We urge you to take in the program then drive the short distance to the wine-tasting event.)

n Wednesday, Feb. 11, at 2 p.m.: A book discussion of “Boy in the Striped Pajamas” by John Boyne. The book tells the story of a lonely and bored boy, Bruno, whose family moves from Berlin to a place called “Out-With” in 1942. The son of a Nazi officer, Bruno eventually befriends a boy in striped pajamas who lives behind a wire fence.

n Saturday, Feb. 14, at 11 a.m.: Musical Discovery Zone. Be sure to register the kids for this event, which provides an opportunity for youth to interact with musicians from the Gulf Coast Symphony as well as practice playing a variety of instruments. Registration is important.

n Also Saturday, Feb. 14, at 2 p.m. is “Phate: The Cosmic Fairy Tale.” Local author Jason Alan reads excerpts from his new book about dying stars, magic, vampires, elves, swords and the continuing war between the forces of good and evil.

n Monday, Feb. 16, at 11 a.m., explore Astronomy for Everyone: Size and Scale of the Universe. This is a family program of celestial objects very large and very small from former NASA consultant, Kevin Manning.
