November is book sale month at the Cape Library

5 min read

Books galore at prices anyone can afford will be on display when the Friends of the Cape Coral Library hold their Fall/Winter Book Sale.

The popular event takes place Thursday, Nov. 20 (35:30 p.m. for members only but you can sign up for membership at the door), Friday, Nov. 21 (9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.) and Saturday, Nov. 22 (9 a.m. to 3 p.m.)

In addition to a room full of inexpensive books, CDs, DVDs, the Friends'(go green) totes will be for sale ($2) as well as the 2015 Book Lovers Calendar ($5). These items make Holiday “stocking stuffers” a smart no-brainer.

The Friends’ book sales help provide funds for library programs and equipment such as the upgraded audio visual system, recently installed. According to Principal Librarian Tori Hersh, this year’s annual library tour from the Oasis third grade class was a success because of the new equipment. In the past, the group had to be broken in to groups of 2025 students.

“Generally, the students at the end of the small groups have a difficult time hearing the librarian leading the tour. Today, Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2014, the upgraded system allowed the library staff to connect an iPad and record a visual virtual library tour and play that tour for 145 third grade students from Oasis. Every child was able to watch the tour and everyone got the same information,” she said.

Adult programs at the library begin the season with Nov. 15’s (1:303 p.m.) “Writing and Telling Your Personal Stories.” Award-winning storyteller Mary Lou Williams will present this nationally-acclaimed program designed by Kim Weitkamp. Techniques for unleashing the significance in life situations and immortalizing these in personal stories will be provided.

On Dec. 1 (6:157:30 p.m.), “Person-alizing your Holiday (and other) Cards” begins Join cartoonist Doug McGregor as he presents artistic tips to help design and/or personalize holiday, birthday, sympathy (or any) card. This is a creative and fun presentation.

These programs are free, sponsored by the Friends of the Cape Coral Library through funds raised primarily from our November and April book sales.

Check the Lee County Library System’s website at www.leelibrary.net for all continuing programs and times, including story times, English caf, Craft Corner, Chess anyone?, Read Down Fines, and others.

In the Cape Coral Library Art Gallery (Sponsored by the Friends

of the Cape Coral Library)

The Friends are proud to present Alberto Cruz’s work in the gallery, along with two of his talented students at the Visual Arts Center of Punta Gorda, Deanna Housfeld and Lionel Lewis.

If there was a prize for the most “Best in Show” winners, Cruz would probably win it hands down (or on his canvas). National and international recognition is routine for this artist who has exhibited from London to Venezuela. He has taught at prestigious art centers in the Florida Gulf Coast Region for 10 years. He urges his students to see and do art “their own way.”

Deanna Housfeld’s work, considered contemporary impressionism with a touch of hyperrealism, is a study of theme, composition and color. “Some of my favorite subjects are the close-ups and details of boats. I enjoy marine subjects.”

In the gallery cases, vases, sculpture and ceramics will be displayed by John and Mary O’Brien. John O’Brien’s criterion is to have “a shapely vase that is as thin as the clay will allow, usually on the verge of collapsing.” Many of the glazes he uses are personally formulated.

Mary O’Brien’s functional items are decorative and whimsical as well. “I use porcelain and stoneware clay which produce durable long-lasting products. The clay and glazes I use are food safe. Additionally, many are dishwasher, oven and microwave safe.”
