Discuss ‘The Devil and Miss Prym’ on Sept. 16 at Cape Library
Next month’s roster of activities at Cape Coral-Lee County Public Library offers topics for all ages. The following activities are free to the public:
n Chess Anyone: 5:30 p.m. Tuesdays, Sept. 1, 8, 15, 22, 29
Rise to the chess challenge and join the fun. Everyone is welcome. Bring a personal chess set, if preferred. Registration is requested.
n Craft Corner: Knitting, Crocheting & Cross-Stitching: 3:30 p.m. Mondays, Sept. 14, 28. Bring your ideas to light and needle a handmade treasure. Materials will be provided, or bring your own project to work on. Registration is requested.
n Book Discussion: Paulo Coelho’s “The Devil and Miss Prym” 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 16. This emotional novel, by the most popular author ever to write in the Portuguese language, examines a community devoured by fear and greed, a man persecuted by his past and a woman searching for happiness. Each faces questions of life, death and power, and each must choose a path in the timeless struggle between good and evil.
n Bagels, Books and Banter 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 22. Join other book lovers and come prepared to talk about a favorite book that you’ve read. Relax over coffee and bagels with old and new friends. Registration is requested.
n Craft Corner: Scrapbooking – Back to School Special!,10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 26. School means buses, books, and back to busy schedules! Start a page with photos of kids’ first days and first impressions of the new school year. Stickers and punches add to the fun. The library will provide paper cutters, tape, scissors, and corner rounders. Registration is required.
n Introduction to Business Decision Database, 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 30.
Learn how to access and use our new business program. Business Decision provides geographically customizable consumer household, market segmentation, and demographic population estimates and forecasts to help small businesses add more customers, find the right site, and target media and marketing campaigns. Registration is required.
n Family Storytime, 10:15 a.m. Tuesdays, Sept. 1, 8, 15, 22, 29; 10:15 a.m. Wednesdays, Sept. 2, 9, 16, 23, 30. This program is for the whole family and lasts about 30 minutes. Registration is required.
n Toddler Storytime, 9:30 a.m. Thursdays, September 3, 10, 17, 24.
Children 2 years old and their caregivers participate in song, fingerplays and short stories. The success of this age group depends on adult participation and encouragement. Toddler storytime lasts approximately 30 minutes. Registration is required.
n Baby-Parent Rhyme Time, 10:15 a.m. Thursdays, Sept. 3, 10, 17, 24; 10 a.m. Saturdays, Sept. 5, 12, 19, 26. Be prepared to tickle, jump and fly with your baby! These rhymes and songs are for infants, up to 24 months, accompanied by an adult. This 20-minute program is filled with songs designed to introduce rhyming and movement to infants. Registration required.
n English-Spanish Family Storytime with Telemundo’s Martin Ycaza, 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 26. Enjoy a special storytime in English and Spanish with family and friends. To help celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, there will be a special visit from Martin Ycaza. He is the host of the show ?En Casa con Martin Ycaza? which airs on the local Telemundo channel. Registration required.
n Preschool Storytime, 11 a.m. Wednesdays, Sept. 2, 9, 16, 23, 30; 11 a.m. Thursdays, Sept. 3, 10, 17, 24. Preschoolers (ages 3 to 5) attend this storytime independently while parents or caregivers wait nearby in the library building. This storytime includes activities that require more participation and a longer attention span. Each preschool storytime lasts about 30 minutes. Registration is required.
n Kids Read Down Fines, 3:30 p.m. Thursdays, Sept. 10, 24; 6:30 p.m. Mondays, Sept. 14, 28. Do you have library fines? Take care of them by reading! Children and teens can earn $2 coupon for every 15 minutes of reading during the allotted time in the designated area of the library. Please bring your library card. For ages 18 and younger.
n Back-to-School Peeps Contest, p.m. Saturday, Sept. 19. Those lazy days of summer are long gone and school is in session. Create a diorama or single Peep (those marshmallow treats you get in the spring) that reflects your first few weeks at school. Prizes will be awarded for the most creative. Consider making your a star – learn more at the contest. Registration is required.
n Johnny Appleseed, 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 25. Puppeteer and storyteller Katie Adams weaves the story of Johnny Appleseed from the early days of the United States. Puppets crafted like old fashion toys, a story quilt, and traditional music are all part of the show. Each square of the story quilt is an episode in the life of the Tall Tale character. Registration is required.
n iLike, 5:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 14. Favorite movie? Favorite book? Favorite CD? Let?s talk. iLike is a place teens can meet and swap favorites. Rather like an in-person online rating system, except it?s face-to-face and there?s pizza. Registration is required.
n Protect Yourself, Hands-On, 6:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 28. Back by popular demand, the Lee County Sheriff?s Department will teach simple moves that may save your life in a tight situation. A waiver signed by a guardian is required. Registration is required.
