Spring Book Sale opens April 23 at Cape library
Spring Book Sale, sponsored by the Friends of the Cape Coral Library, will feature hundreds of books – hard cover and paperback, cookbooks, fiction, non-fiction, children’s texts and DVDs, and the price is right. All the proceeds from the book sales go toward library expenses. The sale opens Thursday, April 23, for members of the Friends of the Library; the sale is open to the public Friday, April 24, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday, April 25, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m
– Children’s Day/Book Day is officially observed on April 30, but the Lee County Library System has scheduled a week of activities leading up to the day of the observance. Celebrate literacy for children of all cultures in recognition of El dia de los ninos/El dia de los libros! Parents and grandparents are encouraged to participate in activities on this internationally celebrated day honoring children, books and bilingual literacy.

– Art Gallery, sponsored and funded by the Friends of the Cape Coral Library, will feature three artists this month:
Skip Weber, retired detective lieutenant from the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office in New Jersey and holds a bachelor degree in criminal justice from Rutgers University. He began sketching at an early age and began watercolor painting after retirement. He is mostly self-taught and has taken classes and workshops at the Cape Coral Art Studio, Cape Coral Art League and Pine Island Art Association. In recent art shows he has won three blue ribbons, a second and third place ribbon and a People’s Choice award for his watercolors.
Joan Ostrowski is recognized throughout Southwest Florida as a leading watercolor artist. In 2005, she earned national recognition by being selected to become a signature member of the National Watercolor Society. Known for her attention to detail and strong technical skill, her subjects convey the deep appreciation she has for them by bringing to life their inherent beauty. She has accumulated over 75 awards and has achieved recognition of her peers.
Ines Buesing’s exposure to art began at a very young age with her parents in northern Germany. She received a degree in elementary education and began teaching art. Sixteen years later she opened her own studio and now shifts residency between Germany and Cape Coral. Although her work is almost exclusively in clay media, she takes care not to become rutted in the same shapes, patterns and techniques.
– English Cafe, 10 a.m. on Fridays, April 3, 10, 17 and 24. Practice your English in a free, informal conversation session for Adult ESOL and ESL students. Each 90-minute session provides adult learners an opportunity to practice speaking English with native speakers.
– Chess Anyone? meets at 5:30 p.m. Tuesdays. Rise to the chess challenge and join the fun. Everyone is welcome. Bring a personal chess set, if preferred. Please pre-register.
– Craft Corner. Knitting, crocheting and cross-stitching, 3:30 p.m., Monday, April 6 and 20. Bring your ideas to light and needed a handmade treasure. Materials will be provided, or bring your own project to work on. Registration is required.
– Craft Corner: Scrapbooking – Showers of Spring, meets at 10 a.m., Saturday, April 25. This month we’ll make pages that reflect spring and renewal. Using a Sizzix die cuter, you can add some critters to your pages. Bring photos and papers that you want to use in your albums in the colors of your choice. The library provides paper cutters, tape, scissors and corner rounders. Registration is required.
– Bagels, Books and Banter, meets at 9:30 a.m., Tuesday, April 28. Join other book lovers and come prepared to talk about a favorite book that you’ve read. Relax over coffee and bagels with old and new friends. Registration is requested.
– Book Discussion: Tom Brokaw’s “Boom! Voices of the Sixties,” 2 p.m., Wednesday, April 15.
– Spring Holiday Craft Program, 4 p.m., Friday, April 3. Registration requested.
– Welcome to Storytime. A library program of picture book sharing, finger plays, songs and other fun activities. Storytime helps children increase listening and group cooperative skills while they hear wonderful stories for their age group. Group size is limited for most storytimes.
– Children’s Day/Book Day, El dia de los nines/El dia de los libros, 11 a.m., Tuesday, April 28.
– Welcome to Storytime. A library program of picture book sharing, finger plays, songs and other fun activities. Storytime helps children increase listening and group cooperative skills while they hear wonderful stories for their age group. Group size is limited for most storytimes. Options include:
– Baby/Parent Rhyme Time (birth to 24 months with an adult), Saturdays, 10 a.m. Features baby action rhymes for parents and babies. Rhyme Time lasts about 20 minutes.
– Toddler Story Time (age 2 with an adult), 9:30 a.m., Thursdays. Two-year-olds with their caregivers, participate in song, finger plays and short stories. Toddler storytime lasts approximately 30 minutes.
– Preschool Story Time (ages 3, 4 and 5), Wednesdays and Thursdays at 11 a.m. Preschoolers attend this story time independently while parents or caregivers wait nearby in the library building. This includes activities that require more participation and a longer attention span. Each preschool story time lasts about 30 minutes.
– Family Story Time, Tuesdays at 9 a.m., Wednesdays and Thursdays at 10:15 a.m. This program is for the whole family and last about 30 minutes. Registration is required.
– Kids Read Down Fines. Take care of your library fines by reading. Children and teens can earn a $2 coupon for every 15 minutes of reading during the allotted time in the designated area of the library. For ages 18 and under. 6:30 p.m., Mondays, April 13 and 27; 3:30 p.m., Thursdays, April 16 and 23.
– Spring Holiday Craft Program, 4 p.m., Friday, April 3. Registration requested. Spring bags, 2 p.m., Tuesday, April 7. Registration requested.
– Firefighting Heroes: Smokey Bear and Friends, 10 a.m., Tuesday, April 7. For ages 3-5. Registration required.

– Sponge Painted Umbrellas, 4:30 p.m., Thursday, April 16. For ages 8-12. Registration required.
All Lee County LIbrary System programs are free and open to the public. A sign language interpreter is available with 48 hours notice. Call the Deaf Service at 461-0334 (voice) and 461-0438 (TTY). Assistive listening devices are available. Lee County Library System also offers free access to books, DVDs, videos, books on tape, electronic resources and other items for a vast collection.
The Lee County Library System makes it possible for people who ordinarily couldn’t visit the library to enjoy reading through the Bookmobile, Books-By-Mail, Talking Books and literacy programs. There’s something for everyone at the libraries.
