Art gallery to celebrate Black History Month

4 min read

In 1926 Historian Dr. Carter Godwin Woodson realized that African Americans were seldom mentioned in American History Books, unless it was in a negative way. Woodson, whose parents were former slaves, decided to establish a Negro History Week to educate the public about African American’s contribution to history. This tradition of a Black History Month celebration continues with a week in February chosen because Frederick Douglas, the famous abolitionist and Abraham Lincoln, the president who ended slavery, were born in that month. This year it is really special for us all, as Barack Obama, our first African American president leads our country. We have seen Cape Coral become a sprawling multi-cultural city, a beautiful quilt with pieces that encompass people of every color, race ,ethnic and religious affiliation.
