Water play fosters learning

By Staff | May 11, 2023

To the editor:

Have you ever wondered what children learn while playing with water?

There may be a day when you were at the park and saw children playing in the splash pad, looking like they were having fun! Playing in the water is an endless opportunity for children to learn and strengthen/use their skills.

Children can explore, grow, and express themselves. This experience allows children to play with others and make new friends. Communicating and sharing toys with one another helps their social skills grow. Limitless tools are available, and some are buckets, balls, and animals. When children squeeze balls, splash water, lift animals, and fill or dump buckets, they practice their gross and fine motor skills.

Problem-solving makes children think. Cognitive skills are exercised by filling or emptying buckets with the right amount of water and how toys float or sink. Incorporating activities like this is an excellent way that children can learn. Water play is an educational activity that children may find enjoyable and exciting. Experiences like this are valuable because these are the most crucial years of their development.
