Rain, rain go away!

By Staff | May 4, 2023

To the editor:

Rain, rain go away! These are familiar words to parents and children alike when dealing with the rainy season in Florida. The anticipated hours that may have to be spent indoors along with the disappointment when outdoor events are canceled can definitely put a damper on things.

However, if we just change our perspective a bit, we can actually embrace these rainy days and see them as an opportunity to allow our children to reap the benefits of playing in the rain,

First, we must dispel the myth that playing in the rain can cause illness. Illness is caused by germs, not rain. To reduce the risk of getting ill, hand washing is our best defense. Also to limit the spread of germs, the best practice is to stay home from school or work when ill. If we have to go out, wearing a mask can also limit the spreading of germs.

Playing in the rain can provide many benefits. Children use many different physical skills when dealing with slippery conditions. They must work harder to balance themselves and in turn this improves their gross motor skills and coordination.

Problem solving skills and critical thinking skills also come into play. Children can be encouraged to think independently as they figure out how they may have to dress differently to stay warm and dry. Children must also think about how to approach each activity successfully so they will not fall or slip.

Healthy lifestyles include daily exercise. Children who are allowed to play outside daily, even in the rain, develop healthy lifestyle habits that can carry on throughout adulthood.

While playing outside in the rain, children are able to enjoy a variety of different sensory experiences than they experience on bright sunny days. The sound of the rain hitting different surfaces, the smell of the rain and soil, how things feel when wet, and how their environment can change and is affected by the rain are all wonderful sensory experiences.

Children can have a fabulous time playing in the rain! So go ahead and jump in puddles, pretend you are in an exotic rainforest, or make footprints in the mud. Playing in the rain is healthy and provides so many benefits, And even more fun, afterwards cuddle together and enjoy being warm and dry!
