To the Editor: Moving to elected city manager would bring no benefit

By Staff | Sep 15, 2022

To the editor:

In the Breeze edition dated Sept. 9, there was a letter indicating it was time for an elected City Manager for Cape Coral. I could not disagree more.

The Mayor and City Council members are elected by the people to make policy. In turn they hire a City Manager to carry out those policies. They interview candidates from around the country to find the person who is best for the job. They are responsible to the people for that decision.

I have been a member of the Cape Coral Budget Review Committee for the past seven budget cycles. Our committee works closely with the City Manager, the Finance Director and City Council for many months before a budget is finalized in September of each year. During the many meetings and information sharing sessions, I have seen first-hand the professionalism and knowledge that City Manager Rob Hernandez brings to the job of managing one of the largest cities in Florida. His knowledge of the workings of Cape Coral is extensive and he is also well schooled in the process of creating a budget. He surrounds himself with smart and capable people. In a word he is more than qualified to be our City Manager.

If we elect a City Manager, who do we get? Do we get the most qualified person, or do we get the most popular person? If we had an elected City Manager, would he or she make decisions based on what is most popular or what is best for the city? Those are not the same thing.

I for one would want the most qualified person.
