The ‘Big Lie’ threatened American democracy

2 min read

To the editor:

The American experiment in Democracy, begun in 1776 has weathered civil war, government corruption, financial disasters and attacks by foreign agents. But never has a sitting President been the reason for an attack on our democracy as President Trump was up to and including Jan. 6, 2021.

We have survived all the previous events, but now we have a divided population that has not been seen since the middle of the 19th Century. The 45th President lied to vulnerable Americans hurt by the changes that progress brings to get elected. These lies worked to divide our nation into haters, prop up the worst of our people, and alienate us from our allies around the globe. Trump provided the fuel to allow disenfranchised Americans to blame others for their misfortunes, even to the point of violence as seen in Charlottesville, Virginia. The KKK, NeoNazis, and a multitude of white supremacy groups are already drowning in hate for Americans unlike them.

The January 6th House committee has finished its investigation into the attack on Congress as they worked to certify our national election. A smooth transition of power has been a given for 240 years, that is until the “Big Lie” that the 2020 Presidential election “stolen” Even after state Republicans recounted the contested votes and certified them to be without error, the outgoing President still lied to his supporters that the election was stolen.

The truth is being presented to the American people so that the “Big Lie” is just that, a lie.

We need to honor the work of the January 6th committee and punish those who sought to overthrow our democracy, including the leader of the “Big Lie.”
