I call this regression

By Staff | Aug 5, 2021

To the editor:

How did we get to this point of regression?

Growing up, my parents took me to the doctor and I was vaccinated and I never contracted any lifethreatening diseases. No one we knew died from life-threatening diseases. There were no anti-vaxxers.

Now, there are too many people who do not believe in getting vaccinated, for whatever unscientific reasons. We are starting to see anti-vaxxers and COVID hoax conspirators dying from COVID. It amazes me that people believe in a God they cannot see nor prove his existence, yet they do not believe the real scientific data they can see. This is the ignorance of our uneducated citizens on full display. I call this regression.

When I lived in Cape Coral, I saw the water quality progressively degrade as well as the fishing. My detractors disagreed. And here we are. The water from the North Spreader Canal in Cape Coral seems to be the cause of the dying Matlacha Pass. Tampa Bay is being decimated. Marine wildlife is dying everywhere. Yet our leaders insist on promoting Southwest Florida as a great place to live and people keep moving here not knowing what awaits them. The developers keep building. The politicians let them. The land is disappearing and water filtration along with it. We have learned nothing from our past history of water pollution and its ensuing disasters. I call this regression.

Florida elects Republican governors who are historically pro-business and pro-development. They talk about improving the environment but dollar signs blind them to what is clearly visible. They have a distorted vision of progress. I call this regression.

DeSantis is overly concerned with personal rights versus common sense actions based on scientific data, even as COVID sweeps across Florida. He thinks there is too much government over-reach. I am sorry, but your personal rights are not the priority when the entire state is at risk under siege from Covid. I call this regression.

Republicans want to limit or eliminate abortions. Republicans want to control a woman’s choice!

Republicans want to erode voting rights. These are two overt, profound examples of government overreach that adversely affect people’s rights. I call this regression.

We claim to be a Christian nation yet our Christian tenets are not reflected in our actions. Are we good stewards of the environment? No. Do we consider the well-being of our brothers and sisters? No. Are we making steady measureable progress in Florida. No.

I call this regression.
