Independence Day

By Staff | Jul 1, 2021

To the editor:

Recently a “journalist” was upset at all the American flags she saw driving around on Long Island, N.Y.

When I read this I was not only offended by her outrage at the symbol of our country but wondered what her outrage was founded upon.

Apparently there are those that connect the American flag belonging to conservatives and/or Republicans.

I think we have lost sight of how our country was founded and what our flag symbolizes.

Our founding fathers fled England for freedom from tyranny and religious oppression.

Our constitution begins with the words “We the people.” The Bill of Rights guarantees freedom of speech, press and religion.

Unfortunately, there seems to be a movement to disavow these rights and create new ones to follow a particular narrative to divide us rather than connect us to OUR country.

The American flag is not a conservative symbol nor is it a Republican symbol — it is a symbol of the freedom fought for not only in the beginning of this nation but all the men and women who fought –and died — to protect it.
