Selective code enforcement affects Cape homeowners

By Staff | Apr 8, 2021

To the editor:

Cape Coral unfortunately has joined the nation in moving to an era of unaccountability.

In viewing the water woes that so many now are facing in the northwest sector of the city, it clearly makes one wonder who is at the helm in governing the planning of new development. From information given by so many in this sector of the unchecked accountability, it is quite evident that there are those unscrupulous contractors coupled with some residents that are failing to comply with the city codes. The truly sad thing is that the city’s code enforcement turns a blind eye to these violations that affect so many residents.

In passing on a perfect example provided to me was that of a new home buyer that had just purchased an existing property in a northwest neighborhood whose well collapsed only two days after moving in. Two houses down from this newly purchased property, a new home was built over a month ago, that is not occupied as of yet. After drilling the new well for this property the building contractor’s drilling company placed a PVC extension from this new well running full blast 24/7 for approximately a month into a empty field filling up the ditch and field on an empty lot behind this new property. Calling Cape Coral’s Code Enforcement, the caller was told on new wells that these contractors could allow this for 3 to 5 days to clean the system. Since this was a clear violation Code Enforcement stated they would send an officer out. Again, unfortunately to no avail, this unchecked water flow continued to fill the empty fields for approximately a month in this time of low water tables with no accountability, as a result contributing to the well collapse of the new resident above. Those failing to be accountable for these violations goes beyond the two contractors. It now extends to code enforcement’s failure to correct these violations.

This is not a new complaint, or the only complaint. This even though resident violators were cited in the past for violations, for example, for commercial vehicles adorning neighborhoods, extra vehicles along the sides of houses, vehicles on empty lots, trash deposited on empty lots, etc. to name a few.

These same violations eventually reappear by the same violators without accountability. In driving through this northwest Sector of the City of Caper Coral one would have to be of the same visual disability as Helen Keller in not seeing these continued violations.

On the federal level, with thousands of illegal immigrants (many children) being brought across our borders by mules, the present administration’s only response is that of telling them not to come. Many are now wondering if this era of unaccountability is the new wave of the future. Immediate deportation along with the National Guard patrolling the borders is the only resolve. I only wish our nation placed as much importance on sheltering our homeless veterans, as they place on sheltering illegal immigrants who are in violation of our laws.

Wake up America!
