Positive action, not negative words, are what can make a difference

By Staff | Apr 1, 2021

To the editor:

It’s been a long time since I have been so frightened and disgusted with an action taken by neighbors in Cape Coral: the flying of a flag with the words “F- Biden.”

We all need to take a deep breath and a step back. The divisions in our community appear to be worsening now that the election is over and, unfortunately, no leader has stepped up to try to heal the ever-widening chasm caused by it.

The shallowness of our leadership is appalling: one elected county commissioner blames Biden for the scarcity of vaccines, our Congressman votes against sending financial help to local people in need, our state legislators push for taking more and more power out of the hands of Lee citizens. Why must everything be viewed through a lens of black or white, or should I say, red or blue? These actions only further divide and polarize.

Does flying a flag attacking a president using coarse language solve any of the problems we are facing: long lines at food banks, poor water quality, high pedestrian deaths, lack of good-paying jobs, traffic congestion?

Perhaps those choosing to fly this flag feel better. But wouldn’t it be great if they could get their jollies by instead helping hungry kids and families here in the Cape? We must rise above partisanship and focus on ways to improve our quality of life. Flying a flag with coarse language does nothin’ for nobody.
