Ways to lower drug prices
To the editor:
I suggest that we take the following steps to lower drug and prostheses prices to medical patients :
#1. Development — Get “For Profit” *O*U*T* of the development of these items. Let their development go forward in publicly funded institutions set up for that specific purpose and each administered by qualified and reputable academic institutions across our nation.
Thus, let us all share the cost. After all, who can say when one will come into need?
#2. Production– When the development is complete, let any qualified for-profit or not-for-profit corporation produce these items and market them competitively like any other industrial/consumer product — but under the watchful eye of the FDA. Actual competition will reduce CEO-bloat.
However, only conscientious capitalists need apply: Corporations with shady histories in the field should really not bother until they have sufficiently demonstrated appropriate repentance for their past misdeeds.
The development of human necessities on a for-profit basis is an unconscionable ripoff!
