Kudos to CCPD for hybrid vehicle purchase

To the editor:

Kudos to the Cape Coral Police Department for purchasing hybrid vehicles for officers. They are both a financially and environmentally responsible purchase. I’ve seen police vehicles idle sometimes for hours at various public events, spewing both taxpayer money and greenhouse gasses into the atmosphere. I realize it was unavoidable, but it was also regrettable. These hybrids solve the problem. I heard elsewhere that Cape Coral is the first municipality in these parts to go the hybrid route. I call that leading by example. Thank you CCPD.

I’ve recently learned that Florida was awarded $166 million as its share of the Volkswagen settlement, and that the DEP is determining how to best spend that money that must, as part of the settlement, be spent to improve air quality. One of the several ways it says this is to be done is through the purchase of electric vehicles and EV infrastructure. I hope that at the appropriate time Cape Coral gets its share of that money and invests it in electric vehicles and infrastructure as they too will be the financially and environmentally responsible thing to do. That would be leading by example, too.
