Chinese drywall issue is ongoing; more coverage needed

2 min read

To the editor:

On April 26, a group of Chinese drywall families went to New Orleans, Louisiana, to bring concerns to Judge Fallon at the monthly status meeting about the lack of action in support of the thousands of CDW families who have lost their homes or are still living with toxic CDW. We dialed in to the monthly status conference which only lasted 6 minutes because they had a short agenda. I guess a month isn’t enough time to accomplish anything of value that the CDW families might need to hear. (Just found out that the people who travelled to New Orleans were not even allowed in the court house.

(One way to have only a 6 minute meeting!)

We do know that there was a local New Orleans TV station talking on the morning news about Knauff remediations that have failed. I have heard that there is a family here in Cape Coral that has a failed Knauff remediation! The biggest concern for the remaining families is Taishan drywall. The judge has ruled in favor of the Chinese government parent company saying that we can’t sue them because they’re a sovereign nation. Why do we have any kind of trade agreements with countries where the government owns corporations and can never be held responsible for poisoning families(or pets, or chemo drugs, or processed meat, or garlic grown in unsanitary conditions, or making lead painted toys)? In our particular case, we’ve been told that we might not even be a part of the Taishan class action suit, because, after seven years, they think our ProWall drywall may have been manufactured by Run & Fly (Jinan) which is a non-participating defendant. If it took our lawyers seven years to make a simple determination like who in China made ProWall, what are the chances we’ll have a lawsuit settled in our lifetime (we’re 70 and 71)?

Lee County is ground zero for CDW but we can find more press coverage in Virginia and Louisiana than we can get here in Lee County. Why?
