Safety all the way, damn the road!

To the editor:

Paraphrasing the famous word of Admiral David Glasgow Farragut: “Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead,” Cape Coral residents unite behind one cause: building a safety net alongside the new Burnt Store Road construction. Apparently there is money for beautification and noise abatement but not safety. It seems to me that the planners and builders of this great road are kicking the problem into the future to the next administration. What good is it to prevent future road congestion without providing for the safety of the community?

Today, at a 55 mile per hour posted speed limit, it is common to see drivers zooming by at 65 to 70 mph. Any distractions will cause a driver and his vehicle to land in a friendly neighbor pool if proper safety is not incorporated in these plans.

These conversations are important because they will leave a record of the concerns and issues raised by existing owners which can be used in the future by homeowners and their attorneys when the needs arise. For, make no mistake, if safety feature is not built in, tragedies will happen.

We expect the current administration to do the right thing. So, Safety all the way, damn the road!
