Turn out for the parks workshops; vote for wildlife and passive parks
To the editor:
Cape Coral’s Department of Recreation and Parks will be having two workshops to get public opinions on a new Park Master Plan for the Cape. These workshops will be Tuesday, Jan. 26, at the Cape Coral Yacht Club on Driftwood Parkway, and Thursday, Jan. 28, at Christa McAuliffe Elementary School. Hours for the workshops are 7-9 p.m. The public is encouraged to attend. Barth Associates, the consultants to the city, will help with this project.
Please come out and support the ideas of keeping the Oasis Woods, next to the Oasis schools, a park for a wildlife sanctuary as well as the old Cape Coral Country Club on Palm Tree Boulevard. Tell them we need to buy the Cape Coral Golf Course and keep it as green space, a passive park for wildlife viewing, camping, fishing, walking, birding. Just an ideal place to see the Cape’s wildlife and enjoy the peace and quiet of almost a forest in Cape Coral. This goes for Oasis Woods as well.
Some people wish to put ball parks, tennis courts, soccer fields, etc. in the Oasis Woods area. There are enough of these recreational facilities in other parts of the Cape. All the high schools have similar facilities as well. Save the Oasis Woods for the eagles, bobcats, birds and other wildlife that live there. The schools that are right there can use the Oasis Woods to study wildlife and do eco projects.
Cape Coral Parks and Rec has an online survey at www.capecoral.net/ParksMP. Nothing is said about family camping, fresh water fishing or general wildlife viewing Score high on buying 185 acres of land on item No.19 and wildlife issues such as wildlife trails. Try to mention birding, camping, fresh water fishing, wildlife watching and tracking. Score low on athletic fields for Oasis Woods and anything that will destroy the prime wildlife habitat in those woods.
