The importance of art in early childhood

As children grow, it is important to foster all areas of their development. Children are naturally curious and explore the world around them in many ways, from the moment children begin to play with their food, or writing on walls; your child is expressing his or herself in their own unique way.
When young children are introduced to art, they are given the opportunity to continue exploring, and express themselves in a creative way.
Many areas of development that can be fostered are language, literacy, fine motor and math. You can begin by reading your child a story, and then suggest drawing or painting something from the story. While a child is painting or drawing show your interest by asking him/her, “What are you painting?” or “Can you tell me what your drawing is about?”
Implementing conversation helps your child use language as an expression of their art. For fine motor try offering various mediums, such as thin or thick paintbrushes and basic safe household items, like cotton swabs or tooth brushes to add different sized strokes or texture to their creations along with colorful, child friendly paints.
You may also consider programs within your community that will help continue your child’s artistic development.
