Extending the bar hours a dopey idea

To the editor

For the Cape Council to even consider the extending of bar hours, in the South Cape, reflects a shameful dereliction of duty and makes one wonder if some Council members understand who they’re serving and what the job is all about.

First of all, shame on the city council acting as the Community Redevelopment Agency Board for considering this idiocy. To deliberately place the council in a bad light, by offering a suggestion that’s just plain looney, is not the reason we have CRAs. CRAs are in place to work on and develop creative ideas that will serve to enhance both their area of responsibility and the entire city as a whole.

This concept will satisfy neither.

To pander to a handful of bar owners at the expense of the Cape’s reputation and safety is just outrageously unprofessional!

As for Council members who would vote “yes” to the 4 a.m. extension, these members have most certainly lost their focus and or they just don’t care about the safety of the citizens, the reputation of the city, or the will of the people. I personally have polled more than 150 Cape residents, including business owners, and there was not one – not a single one -who was in favor of the time extension. The message to the council in this case is “We expect you to legislate to make for a better city”! We don’t expect you to pay back your supporters by suggesting procedures that are dangerous and diminish the Cape’s image.

Those that insist on pushing forward with this insanity, if they have any moral backbone, will incorporate in their message that they are certain this is safe for the community. And, if it passes, they will take personal responsibility for the happenings. And, finally, in this or any other issue please do not judge the interest of the community by the size of the audience in council chambers.

You were hired to do a job, to serve the people, to make the Cape better, to keep citizens safe, and to be honest and fair in all decisions. We expect no less -and we’d like to trust you.
