Get out and vote

To the editor:

This letter is written to the citizens of Lee County requesting your support, the support of your church leader, family, friends, neighbors and any organization that you are a part of concerning the upcoming elections in your designated area of our state and local government.

As an African-American growing up in Jacksonville, Fla. during the Civil Rights era, our parents had to endure a substantial amount of pain and suffering because people of color were too scared to get out and vote because of repercussions from other people who had the privilege to speak. Today, we don’t have to be afraid anymore! All we have to do is GET UP AND GO TO THE POLLS because People have died for us to have the right to VOTE!

I am not asking you to vote for any particular candidate because that will be your choice, but I am asking you to vote on or before Nov. 4, 2014 because I know who I will be voting for to serve as our next Governor of the State of Florida.

In addition, as a citizen of this county, I will be supporting the “Proposition to Increase School Board Members from Five to Seven with Five Single Member Districts.” I have been in Lee County since 1994 and have never seen anyone of color on the School Board! Before I left Jacksonville, Fla., we had a seven-member School Board with at least three-four African Americans serving and they served us very well. Let’s make a difference here in Lee County. It is past time for a change! This is our time to reduce the disenfranchisement of the citizens in our community and we must do it NOW!.

Thank you and please get out and vote on or before Nov. 4.
