Poverty blights across generations

To the editor:

I am sure the Dunbar community as well as I appreciate Rep. Fitzenhagen’s concerns. However some of her remarks add to the burden of this community. For the most part these people are good hard-working, loving, religious people. They placed a very high value on their religion. And yes they respect each other and they value life dearly. There is a criminal element in that environment they wish they could be relieved of. You will see signs indicating that a number of homes have security monitors, but you see many more signs with beware of dog and do not trespass signs. And there is a church in almost every block.

Sadly enough the illustration by the artists in a local paper was correct, Andrew never had a chance, his mother never had a chance and more than likely her mother never had a chance. The story in the news indicated that there is a 15-year-old sibling who has a girlfriend who is pregnant.

The chances of success in that environment is small.

Please understand that our failure to grab the scope of this problem and solve it has caused generation of human pain, suffering and loss of precious resources that America could put to much better use.
