Child’s death points to societal ills

2 min read

To the editor:

The tragic death of the child in Dunbar is an example of America’s failure. As I canvas in Southwest Florida I realize that poverty and blight in some of our areas exceeds that of Third World countries. The poor in America are giving much and receiving little. Many are struggling just to exist.

Much is being done by the public to relieve hunger and poverty, but this does not rise to the necessary level to make a real difference. For the past four years the government has been absent, it is concentrating its effort on the rich. To that end I blame all of us for allowing that to occur. And I particularly blame the party of no (Republican-tea party).

At a time in our country when we should have been passing legislation like the Humphrey-Hawkins legislation, they could not allow our people to have health care legislation passed and enacted. They have denied any legislation that would have made life better for the middle class and poor. Wages has been on a downward spiral and, in many areas, jobs, education, and benefits such as lunch programs have been cut when they should have been improved.

The police, as usual, seek answers from the community. And I am sure the community is seeking answers from the police. The police need to do more community policing and bridge building. We in Southwest Florida need to work together to get more accomplished.

In this election year I feel sorrow for those who with little conscience continue to support the current governing bodies who do you live.
