Support LCEC as the Cape’s utility provider

Re: “On the Move” Quarterly Update from Cape Coral City Hall

LCEC’s 30-year contract to provide electric for Cape Coral expires in 2016. The city wants input from the residents and says their opinions will play an important role in the decision.

The alternative would be for the city to start and own a municipal electric utility.

With the city’s extensive experience in managing a large-scale public utility (water, sewer and irrigation services), the city says this option merits some consideration. The website history of Cape Coral City water, sewer and irrigation services shows the tremendous job of operating a utility.

The cost of starting a city-owned utility can be staggering. I can envision city residents footing the bill in new taxes for start-up costs and studies. Let’s push to get this decision, if it comes up, to be put on a public voter referendum. I don’t think we need to change something that doesn’t need fixing. For more information, see website “Cities Weigh Taking Over From Private Utilities.”

LCEC is as much a part of Cape Coral as the city itself. Electric service it provides to Cape Coral is the best. Charitable activities, keeping rates down and profit-sharing with its customers is something we don’t want to lose. Let’s support LCEC. Emails to the city planners would be an excellent way to let our support known.

We can’t let apathy toward this decision win out.
