Does it make sense to cut school funding?

1 min read

To the editor:

Gov. Scott in his campaign for election said he would reduce property taxes, but did not state how he intended to do it even though it should have been obvious.

His legislative program now proposes to reduce the state per pupil aid to our school districts thereby reducing the state levy for schools on our property taxes, but that raises some questions. Will it really reduce property taxes or just cause our school districts to increase their levy? What about charter schools that our legislature has promoted? They cannot levy taxes and do not receive monies from the school districts levy.

Lastly and perhaps the real issue, is there any wisdom in cutting costs for education? Rank and file Floridians cannot all afford private schools.
