Offended by flag-waving protesters
To the editor:
On Saturday, March 20, I was on a bus traveling north on Del Prado when we passed a group of people protesting the Health Care Bill. Many of them appeared to be eligible for Medicare, a government-run health care system. They were waving home-made signs, “Kill the Bill,” “No Obama Care” as well as waving American flags. If I were not on a bus I wold have liked ask them how waving flags and signs would cure my colon cancer or my diabetes with all its attendant problems.
While I recognize that dissent is an American privilege, I do feel it should be a meaningful, thoughtful dissent. These people obviously had their own health care insurance, and were not concerned about those who did not. This is what I call one-dimensional thinking.
To disagree with an idea is one thing but to do so under the guise of patriotism is an abomination. In this case waving flags was not an expression of patriotism but rather one of selfishness.
