AARP correct in support health care reform

2 min read

To the editor:

Health care is a basic need. Yet, in America, thousands die as a consequence of no health coverage. To AARP, this is intolerable. Quality, affordable health care has been AARP’s goal for over 50 years. People opposed to health care reform first told lies to scare seniors. Then they attacked AARP.

But AARP is still fighting for quality, affordable health care. Fighting to close the Medicare Part D doughnut hole. Fighting to protect the benefits seniors have earned. Fighting to ensure that no one – not insurance companies or the government – can get between us and our doctors. And above all, fighting to stop insurance abuses, like denying coverage for pre-existing conditions, or canceling coverage in the middle of an illness, or charging way more the older we get.

I am a retiree, and I have got good coverage. But not everyone has. Millions of worried Americans do not. That is why I am fighting along with AARP and sending this message to Congress, to Democrats and Republicans: End the bickering. End the partisanship. We need you fighting for us, not against each other. We need you to come together and pass health care legislation. And we need you to do it now.
