Voting meetings should be weekly
To the editor:
We currently have only 20 voting meetings a year! That right folks in a city of some 150,000 residents! The city has many serious issues that need resolution which can only happen at a voting meeting! Voting City Council Meetings should be held every week.
We always had weekly voting meetings until the prior appointed mayor changed that. For as long as I have been here if a holiday fell on a Monday we had the meeting on Tuesday. No more! We also had regular Committee of the Whole meetings but no more!
Councilman Leetz proposed having weekly voting meetings on Tuesdays to avoid the problem with holidays but unfortunately, no action was taken.
We have the UEP, the utility rates, the roads in the north Cape; we need to hire a qualified city manager, director of finance and many other issues that need prompt action. There needs to be discussion on the $1 million dollars in travel that I brought up Monday night but unfortunately there wasn’t any substantive response from council and none from the interim city manager.
There has been plenty of talk about reducing the labor force but the first place to cut are items like bottled water for tens of thousands of dollars, food purchased at Publix for tens of thousands of dollars, car washes at tens of thousands of dollars and all this travel at $1 million plus. There are many other items stuffed in the budget that need to be weeded out like take-home cars, before you start talking of reducing the labor force!
We have the issue of people being over charged on their utility bills. They can put all the spin on it that they want but it is clear that the prior administration screwed up along with the then council. There are significant reserves that can be used to pay these people.
If I did not pay my water bill and then stated that it was “my intent” to pay it would they forgive it? No they would just shut off the water! Don’t pay your assessments and they slap a lien on your home!
Stop with the crafty language that is being spewed and do what is right by the people affected by this screw-up!
