School dress codes need to be modified

To the editor:

Here in Cape Coral I must say that I have a very negative opinion on what the dress code is in high schools. Students should be mature and responsible enough to decide on their own, what is and what is not appropriate for school. Teenagers believe in expressing themselves through their style of dress, and by having such a strict dress code, it makes it very difficult, more so for girls then guys, to express ones self.

Personally, I prefer to dress preppy. I enjoy wearing cute summer dresses, skirts, and denim shorts. The problem is, I am also very tall compared to most teenage girls; meaning that I also show more skin. I received dress code this school year because I was wearing a dress that was one inch above the knee, just one inch more than what dress code allowed. The administrator even said it herself, “Honey, you look adorable, but go change.” High school students should be able to present themselves appropriately for a school environment, while also being comfortable, shouldn’t they?

The School District of Lee County should propose a more logical dress code. It would be more reasonable to have a dress code such as nothing can be shorter than your fingertips, and that your sleeves or straps must be at least as thick as two fingers. Everyone should agree that this is much more sensible.
