A ‘free education’ isn’t without substantial cost
To the editor:
High school costs are ridiculously expensive! Paying for tests, graduation attire, and sport fees are out-of-this-world expensive. With school costs so high continuing education for some students is a far reach.
In order to graduate high school you have to take the SAT and ACT. When my mother took these tests they were free, nowadays to take both tests it’s close to a hundred dollars! The only way to get a waiver for it is if you have free and reduced lunch. However, to be eligible for this you practically have to be homeless. Plus, many times students take the tests more than once to get a higher score in order to get into a better college which further drives up the cost!
On top of this fee, are cap and gown costs for graduation. And you can’t borrow from a previous graduate, but have to buy your own. With the economy at an all time low, some families are struggling to make their mortgage. If you want to join a sport, you better start digging in your couch for change! I’m a high school cheerleader and we have to pay more than $400!
I think there should be more ways to help with financing. For college you get the opportunity to apply for scholarships to help pay for its expenses. But for high school they just expect you to pay for it. There should be more help in financing for school. They want students to continue their education, but how can we, when were struggling to make it through high school?
