Vote for change

To the editor:

I am taking the time to write this letter as I feel the people of Cape Coral must remain informed and educated of the issues within our city as well as of the candidates who are asking us to put them in elected seats and make decisions on “our” behalf.

First and foremost I would like to thank all the people who volunteered their time to my campaign efforts and I would like to thank all of those who supported me. During the campaign I became acutely aware of the underlying issues enveloping Cape Coral and ultimately clamping it shut. Campaigning in a city where so many are feeling destitute was a very sobering experience. Despite not “making” it through the Primary, I decided I needed to try and make some changes. This has led me to having in-depth, fact-based conversations with some of the candidates still in the race. I addressed my concerns for the future of the people of Cape Coral, and wanted to make sure they had the same concerns as I do.

One question and topic of discussion was where do the businesses of Cape Coral generate some of their revenue base? Some knew the answer I was seeking and some did not. If you are reading this and are not sure yourself then consider these facts. Revenue base comes from the retired and vacationing people who come to this area every year to spend their winters. Our local government has made that nearly impossible for people over the last eight years. Allow me to provide you with an example: A home in Cape Coral owned by a retired person was taxed $2933.13 in year 2000. That same home reached a high of $7927.17 in year 2007. That is an increase of $4994.04. This money did not go to the needs of the people. It went to our local city and county government to disperse as they saw fit, not as how we the people saw fit. I believe it is about time we tell them we have had enough and we want change.

We must have change and reform. We must control our government and force accountability. We cannot allow this unending spending of our money. Let’s take our city and our money back so that we can live here and enjoy it. Let’s be advocates for ourselves and our neighbors, co-workers, and families.

I am Steve Lovejoy and I am a former candidate for the mayor of Cape Coral. Let your voice be heard and be sure to vote on Nov. 3. It is time for a positive change.

I am endorsing the following candidates for office and hope you will as well: Mayor, John Sullivan, Council, Chris Chulakes-Leetz, John Cataldi and Jim Martin.
