Become informed – and vote
To the editor:
I made my first visit to Cape Coral in 1974. I was at that time engaged as an advisor for a large national bank.
I was accompanied by my wife on that trip and the two of us were so impressed and taken by the area that we purchased a home before the week was out and have been residents ever since- a decision that we have never regretted.
However, there have been many troubling changes to the city over the years and I am very concerned that we are now threatened with becoming a third-rate city. It is time for the citizens of Cape Coral to wake up. The dismal turnout of voters for the recent primary election was shameful and seems to say: “I don’t care- let the place self destruct.”
I suggest that we pay but little attention to the many political signs being erected and the campaign money being spent on any particular candidate. It is far more important that we become informed about the issues and the many challenging problems now facing the Cape. What are the positions of the candidates; are they consistent, what changes are they advocating, do they make sense?
I have been a member of the Planning & Zoning Commission for the past 20 years and the chairman for the past five years. Prior to that I was a member of the Land Use Task Force for five years, thus I know about the operations of the city and have been a witness to the many mistakes that have been made over the years.
A well informed and voting electorate can make a difference, but it can only be accomplished if we, each and everyone, become well informed about the important issues and exercise our right to vote in the upcoming general election.
We need to bring the Cape back to reality if it is to prosper and continue its development as a premier city.
