Weather won’t let basset hounds take part in today’s parade
To the editor:
The basset hounds have provided comic relief for eight years now in the Columbus Day Parade. We certainly needed that this year what with all the financial problems and worries Cape Coral residents are facing.
Unfortunately our S.W. FL Basset Hound Rescue & Social Club reluctantly decided to cancel the Basset Hounds’ appearance in the parade this year because of the forecast of record-breaking high temperatures and humidity. We felt it truly would be cruelty to animals as the macadam on the streets would be so hot on the pads of their feet (not to mention the human beings getting ready for it all!) This was particularly a problem as the parade was changed to be in the hottest part of the day, i.e. 3 p.m. and also walking west into the sun.
We are so sorry that they won’t be there this year but hopefully will be in the years to come and also for the Veterans’ Day Parade this year on Wednesday, Nov. 11.
Please feel free to contact me at 540-9691 should you ever be interested in adopting a basset hound. We have rescues available from time to time. Or contact me if you have a basset hound and would be interested in attending our get-togethers or learning more about us.
There are so many other pressing issues that one could write a Letter to the Editor about, and I often feel strongly about them and don’t seem to get to letter writing. However, I did want to explain to you folks who so loyally applaud them each year about why no bassets in the parade today and at least say we’re sorry that we can’t be with you.
