Follow the money

To the editor:

Campaign Season is upon us. There is an old saying “if you really want to know where someone is coming from, follow the money”.

In following the money, the following has jumped off the Campaign Treasurer’s Report Summary pages for Jim Burch, who is running for mayor. Clearly at least 85 percent of the contributions to his campaign has come from special interests and Political Action Committees from as far away as Washington D.C., Orlando, Miami, Miami Lakes, Chicago, Ill etc. There were quite a few from Plumbers Unions outside Florida. Could that possibly be with the influence of MWH? Washington, D.C. contributions, could that be with the influence of his friend Barney Franks, an infamous member of the House of Representatives. What do you think?

What was more interesting was the fact that only 14 percent of the contributions to Jim Burch’s Campaign have come from Cape Coral residents. That in my opinion a sad commentary on his candidacy.

It was also interesting to note that Burch, Bertolini, McClain and McGrail all received monies from Newcom Real Properties LLC. This company is registered with Florida as a Foreign Limited Liability Company with their head office located in Chicago, Ill. This is a company that has appeared before Council for Major Land use changes which could have a profound affect on the residents of Cape Coral. My interest piqued as to why this company only chose those candidates to contribute monies to. I further question why Mr. McGrail chose to list Mr. Newcom as simply a Realtor from Chicago when in point of fact he is Newcom Real Properties LLC. Is Mr. McGrail attempting to throw the people off as to where this money actually came from? You decide.

Why are their monies coming from outside of Florida and Political Action Committees? What is really going on? You decide.

To be fair I also followed the money in John Sullivan’s campaign for Mayor and found the following. In reviewing the Treasurer’s Report Summaries for his campaign it shows that 55.602 percent of the contributions to his campaign came from Cape Coral residents; 29.209 percent came from John’s personal loans to his campaign which equates to a total of 84.81 percent Cape Coral resident’s monies contributed to John Sullivan’s Campaign and 15.18 percent coming from local businesses. No Political Action Committees donated to John Sullivan’s campaign.

Where the monies come from is quite telling! Do you want your elected officials to be beholding to special interest groups, Families for Cape Coral’s Future (which is nothing more than the construction industry) and Political Action Committees from all over the United States?

I have decided that I do not want candidates elected that are getting their support from special interest groups and Political Action Committees from all over the United States rather than from residents of Cape Coral.

I for one am sticking with John Sullivan for Mayor, Jim Martin, John Cataldi and Chris Chulakes-Leetz for Council as being the people’s Candidates and who are supported by the people of Cape Coral!
