Can ‘the people’ prevail?

2 min read

To the editor:

Before every election, the conscientious among us try to advise our Cape friends and neighbors of what is at stake. Nevertheless, they continue to put the “fat cat” on the council – whose sole aim is to drive out the non-club members. (who are unable or unwilling to pay higher taxes, fees and assessments). We the people have been out voted on the council five-three for years now, and “changing the guard,” piecemeal, has not helped at all.

Is it possible that Sullivan and McGrail can carry through?

The present council brooks no dissent or input from the public. We voted for tax decreases and are patently ignored by council and city manager. (Why won’t the council look for a competent man to “run the city?”)

We citizens should be allowed and encouraged to speak at all meetings, for as long as it takes to make the point. (Speech instructors will tell you that you cannot properly introduce yourself in less than five minutes.) And even if we do speak, our points will be ignored by that illustrious body.

The cockamamie rules and regulations emplaced by this city have continued the disdain in which we are held by the rest of the county.

As soon as it becomes feasible to so, many will leave “this tale of perpetual woe.” Since the tax base will then be devastated, even the “club-members” will be shocked by their astronomical tax bills. (And serves them right I’d say!)
